Please note: this story refers to a rescue that some readers may find upsetting.
On 4 December, RSPCA Sheffield was asked if we could make space to help rehome a young male dog. At the time, that was all the information we were given.
What we didn’t know was that this dog’s story had already touched thousands of people online — or that he had endured one of the most distressing experiences imaginable.
That dog is now known as Lucky.
Many of you may have seen footage of his rescue shared on social media. It is difficult to watch. A frightened young dog, trapped and exhausted, hiding in bushes, his tail tucked tightly beneath him. When we realised that the dog we were preparing to welcome was the same dog from that footage, our hearts broke for what he had been through.
A rescue made possible by teamwork
Before anything else, we want to express our sincere thanks to everyone involved in Lucky’s rescue.
This was a multi-agency operation involving highly skilled RSPCA Inspectorate staff, experienced drone volunteers, and South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue. Their combined expertise, patience and determination ensured that Lucky was brought to safety.
Without that teamwork, the outcome could have been very different — and we would not have the privilege of caring for Lucky today.
Meet Lucky
Lucky has now been with us for a little while, and we are delighted to say that he is an incredible dog.
He is bright, energetic, affectionate and full of personality. A large pointer cross — likely with Labrador — Lucky has the intensity and intelligence of a pointer alongside the goofiness and warmth of a lab. He is clever but clumsy, sensitive but fun-loving, and completely unapologetic about being himself.
Despite everything he has been through, Lucky’s tail rarely stops wagging.
Like many animals who have experienced trauma, Lucky will need understanding, patience and continued support when he moves into his forever home. Our team has been working carefully to learn what he finds challenging and how best to help him feel safe and confident. With the right family, he will be a wonderfully rewarding companion.
Finding the right forever home
Lucky does have some specific rehoming requirements, which are in place for one reason only: to make sure his next move is his last.
We are now looking for a home that can build on the foundations already in place and continue helping Lucky to blossom. You can read more about Lucky and how to apply to adopt him via his rehoming profile:

How you can support Lucky
Caring for animals like Lucky comes with significant costs. He currently has ongoing veterinary needs, and our team is committed to giving him everything he needs to recover fully and prepare for his future.
If you would like to support Lucky, you can donate via our website to help cover his medical care and ongoing support. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real difference.
Lucky is also a very food-motivated boy and loves his toys — particularly tough, durable ones. Training treats are always very welcome and put to excellent use in helping him learn and build confidence.
Thank you for being part of Lucky’s journey
We know Lucky has many supporters who have followed his story from the very beginning. We promise to keep you updated as his journey continues, and we hope that before long he will be bouncing around his very own living room, finally safe and settled.
Until that day comes, Lucky is very much loved by our team — just as he deserves to be.
